“Outstanding Overall Program”

What’s So Cool About Manufacturing (WSCM) is a student video contest with the goal to create awareness within the schools and the community about cool manufacturing careers through the eyes of 7th and 8th grade students. The team, guided by their Teacher Coach, conducted research, did filming at Mecal by Starn, and edited their video for final submission. Fourteen schools in Erie and Crawford Counties were paired with a manufacturer partner.

Mecal’s team was from Meadville Middle School and consisted of 6 students from 7th & 8th grade. The process started last Fall when the students visited the shop floor, asked questions and took various video clips. Then the class meets and works on editing video, scripting and overall concept.

The Northwest Contest of What’s So Cool About Manufacturing (WSCM) for middle schools in Erie and Crawford Counties has wrapped up and the virtual Awards Event premiered on YouTube. Since the in-person awards event needed to be canceled due to COVID-19, the winners were announced during a video which premiered on YouTube on April 20th. The “Outstanding Overall Program” award was received by our team, Meadville Middle School! They will now represent our district (Northwest) at the statewide competition – which will air Tuesday, June 9th at 12:30pm - as a live stream. They are also hoping it will air on cable channels as well.
